“I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.”
This line is taken from the poem, Invictus, by William Henley. Its theme focuses on the unconquerable spirit, never losing hope, always holding your head high and having the courage to decide your own future. This poem resonates with me and I carry its message with me in all aspects of my life: my personal life, business life and family life. It is a message that I impart in my motivational talks with young people, with my staff and with my son.
As a young person, growing up in a disruptive environment, I was lucky to have the benefit of role models and mentors. A hard-working tireless mother, educators, scout leaders and family inspired me. I was a Springbok scout at age 16 and flourished surviving in nature with nothing but your wit and resourcefulness. The life-lessons, bonds, physical, mental and spiritual development as a young adult, will forever be a source of strength and inspiration.
I entered the job market as a menial labourer aboard a fishing vessel as a rite of passage into the harsh and brutal world of seafaring men. At the age of 23, I responded to the inner curiosity that resided in me about what I could do with the power of technology. Armed with a passion for IT, two years of tertiary training in the discipline, a modest pension pay-out and a vision, I left the employ of a blue-chip company and took the risk of going into business solo. I knew that hard work and tireless effort would accompany that decision. That decision sat right with me.
….and today I have a 28-year track record in the industry and a lean, long-serving team that services our client base. As an organisation we keep abreast of new innovation and technological advances that could offer benefits to our clients. We align and certify with industry leading vendors to provide qualified skill and expertise. We evaluate, implement and rigorously test new technologies in our efforts to identify fit-for-purpose reliable solutions for our clients, as a R&D cost to business.
An accomplishment for which I am truly grateful and that gives me fulfilment is that I was able to grow my own timber. Along my journey I have developed two young Systems Engineers, Brandon and Rudi, who are currently the organisation’s technical leads, providing operational leadership and offering our clients internationally recognised professional certification and global industry experience.
I am excited about our new business brand and look forward to charting a significant course of world-class service excellence. A new service brand for the modern-day enterprise, the Always On I.T. way.
